Yesterday at training, Robyn called me in for my session
she said to start with the pull-down which was cool. I noticed the
weight was set at 260 so in my typical and sometimes foolhardy Iron Gimp
manner I asked her if we could try it. She consented so I sat down and
strapped myself in. Well, this time, at least, foolhardiness did not
come into play and I successfully did my reps at 260 lbs, which is not
only 10 lbs short of double my body weight, but it's also 13 lbs *more*
than I weighed as "Porker Pat" when I had my first stroke!
Unbelievable!! I'm still aghast to think about how weak I was when I began my workout with the Exercise Institute in January of 2010. Heck, I
was even weaker when I was discharged from rehab in 2009!

About

  • My Story 3-time stroke Survivor. The first was a TIA of which I have no memory since my last stroke - a bleed that nearly killed me. Hospitalization was 5 weeks, then discharged to a skilled nursing/rehab facility for five months and 11 days. My website is www.irongimp.com and www.netmagic.net/~pat is my where my success story resides until such time until I can rewrite it.

It's been 95-100/65 since I stopped taking propafenone. <pose> He also had me discontinue potassium chloride. <high five> I just checked to see the meds I was on in rehab and there were 11 of them. That was late 2008 and early 2009. This leaves me taking only losartan and carvedilol. That's an 80% reduction in meds. This is why I don't cheat on my food regimen and why I exercise as I do. I was a 247 lb fat guy I call "Porker Pat" when I was hospitalized in 2007 with my clot. I've lost 112 lbs and my body fat is 13%. There is a reason for everyone to treat health seriously with exercise and a proper food regimen. Get on the health wagon NOW. It's never "too late".

Specifically, nouns that are too hard to remember and/or pronounce. More specifically, names of muscles and/or muscle groups. I'm starting with three, which I call, respectively, "fuscle", "huscle" and "buscle". My logic is flawless; "fuscle" is any muscle of the face, "huscle" is any muscle of the hand, whereas "buscle" is the big butt muscle, formerly known as "glute". Thus, it is much easier than trying to remember the long latin names. Just remember, guys, that if you use your huscle on a gal's buscle you just might receive her huscle heavily on your fuscle.  less

I began a new round of speech therapy this morning to address soft palae and other issues related to & affecting my ability to improve on trombone. I must say that this was one of the most informative sessions I've ever had. The mechanics of voice, breathing, et al it absolutely fascinating and having an extra pair of eyes is invaluable. I made more progress in this single session than I have in over three years of conventional trombone practice. I kid you not! This is putting a much more scientific twist to my practice and while that may sound a bit "cold", I sorely need this to better my chances at playing in ensembles again. I don't know if these are things once learned and are in my stable of lost memories that happened with my last stroke or things that I just took for granted but the fact is that I can now go for 10 seconds consistently without air leaking through my soft palate when I play. That is HUGE!! I also can sense a leak's beginning a...    less

Gosh, I'm so sorry for not logging on here more often, fols. I'm trying to keep my online time down so I can be sure to have adequate time for my life's necessities.

I'm starting a new round of speech therapy this week to address some facial, mouth, thrat and sinus issues that have held me back from advancing my trombone playing. Now that I'm in a comfort zone with my health I want to devote more time and energy to that with the hope of being able to once again play in ensembles. There are no guarantees in recovery so I'm not counting any chickens. That's the same philosphy that I've always used in recovery so it should work with this as well. Keeps the frustration at bay and reduces the pressure. :)

My yearly physical was wonderful; A1C 5.1, HDL 46, LDL 75, BP 107/71. Strength training is going great as usual and I weigh in at a svelte 139 now, which just might end up as 135 & 15% body fat.

    I hope you're all doing well! :D

Had an episode with a-fib though I was in no immediate danger, learned that oftentimes folks go for decades without knowing they have a-fib. <boggle> Cardio doc put me on rythmol to keep a-fib from recurring. He also reduced Coreg by 50%. Got my broken tooth fixed. Had my first-ever colonoscopy which yieled no polyps and 2 small diverticula that show no signs of problems. Had neck swelling investigated via biopsy & iodine ct. Both came out negative and the ct clearly showed the swelling to be a salivary gland. It also has cool info about health, fitness and exercise. I highly recommend it! My brain's post-stroke cognitive issues have kept me reading it very slowly & laboriously (as opposed to me pre-stroke brain that had no problems with math/scientific/technical learning at all - everything was pretty easy to learn) so I'm still in the 3rd chapter. Thanks KS! :) Actually I haven't been involved with PT since August 2009, when my benefit ran out. This is pure strength training, much more intense than even the toughest of physical therapists would offer. It's also very conducive to any stroke Survivor's recovery, even if a Survivor is wheelchair bound. The only thing a person needs is the desire for improvement. But I would caution anyone to consult their doc just to be safe. That said, many docs might be reticent or even dead set against one pushing their self so hard so it would be crucial for the patient to make sure their doc is a more progressive thinker than one who subscribes to obsolete thinking.

Well, it's been an interesting time, what with my sensory nervous system finally awakening and other delights. I made it over a major hump in strength training. When first started 1.5 yrs ago I was lucky to get 4 machines done in a session. With my trainer helping to get my slow self between machines faster I can do 8 and I'm shooting for 10. With the weather having warmed up I can walk outside and lately my strength & resulting stability has grown to the point that I can successfully negotiate grassy terrain and minor slopes.
